Holcomb’s vision for outdoor recreation will yield amazing dividends for many generations
Gov. Eric Holcomb’s $1 billion Next Level Connections plan will ensure broadband internet service throughout Indiana and complete important infrastructure projects statewide. The governor’s vision for outdoor recreation in Indiana, included in his plan, also will yield amazing dividends for many generations.
Holcomb has pledged $90 million to create more hiking, biking and riding trails to link with the 3,600 miles of trails across the state. The goal: every Hoosier will live within five miles of a trail by 2020.
Imagine what this transformational program could do for Indiana. The most obvious benefit is improving the health of Hoosiers. More trails equal more opportunity to get outside and exercise. More exercise means better health — physical and mental —reason enough to spend the money for additional trails.
But it’s also an opportunity to reach the future. Further developing Indiana’s natural assets will give millennials better access to explore their surroundings and discover first-hand the rich natural and cultural diversity across Indiana.

Imagine, too, using the state’s money to unlock even more capital to establish trails and conserve nature. Indiana’s corporate community, which understands how important this can be for Indiana’s health, economy and community engagement, now has a direct opportunity to participate. The same for the state’s generous philanthropic entities.
With this new grant program, we can engage millions more Hoosiers with our state’s varied and beautiful natural areas. Indiana’s remarkable geographic diversity too often is a revelation for Hoosiers.
The century-plus legacy of our state parks is just the first point of reference. In addition, many inspiring scenic natural areas have been preserved by the Department of Natural Resources and land trusts such as The Nature Conservancy for Hoosiers to explore and enjoy.
Working with our partners, the conservancy has been working in Indiana for 60 years to protect irreplaceable forest, prairie and wetlands in the state. Our mission is to protect lands and waters for both nature and people. Creating trails to link these areas is an incredible opportunity for the people of Indiana.
The Nature Conservancy is proud to work with the governor and many others to help design a comprehensive program that can link people and communities with nature. Holcomb’s Next Level Connections is a unique and visionary plan to elevate the quality of life in Indiana. It’s also a great way to help Hoosiers reap the benefits of conservation while protecting our natural heritage.
